The night was actually pretty peaceful compared to the tension in the house. He was glad to be out in the fresh air, even if his breath came out in little white clouds.
He was fully clothed with shoes and a jacket, but the dew-covered grass still soaked the bottoms of his pants.
He shone the flashlight on the map. There was a path he was following and it ended on the paper as a rectangular square. That could be a number of things. Perhaps it was an old foundation somewhere, or a plot of land sectioned off by a rock wall.
After a few more minutes of walking, he found out where and what it was.
A cemetery emerged out of the trees, surrounded by an iron fence. Parts of it were rusting away. The gates were open and one looked like it was about to fall off.
âWeird,â he muttered. This property just kept getting creepier and creepier. What was he going to find next? A pit of dead bodies?
He peered into the gates, listening for the sound of animals over the chirping of the cicadas and crickets. But, there were no animal noises. It was just him alone.
âWell, thanks for this discovery, strange little mapâ¦â he said, folding the paper up to stuff into his pocket. This cemetery was certainly anticlimactic. âI was expecting some treasure or somethingâ¦â
But, then something caught his eye.
A light was floating around above one of the tombstones. Harrison stopped to look closer, but the light was moving very fast. He couldnât tell if it was a flashlight or some sort of lightening bug. It zipped around behind some trees and was gone.
He hurried to follow it, walking parallel across the rows of tombstones, until he came to the other side of the cluster of trees. But, to his dismay, the light was gone.
âHello?â he called out, his voice sounding too loud in the quiet of the night. âIf thereâs someone out here, youâre trespassing on private property. I wonât hesitate to call the police.â
Just to be sure that there was nobody around, he walked further into the cemetery towards where the light would have ended up. Of course, he didnât find a light over there, but what he did find was equally as intriguing.
The entrance to a great stone crypt was carved into the side of a hill. On top of the crypt was a stone gargoyle that looked down at him menacingly. It gave him the creeps.
The menacing face of the creature was out of place among the crucifixes and angel carvings.
âI donât know what they were thinking when they put you up, old guy,â he muttered. âSomebody had to be a little messed up in the head.â
Then he noticed something else out of place.
The wooden door to the crypt was open about a quarter of the way and the padlock that looked like it had once held the doors shut was dangling from the handle.
Could whoever was walking around with the light have gone down
